Spice Wolf Volume 1   [SPICE WOLF V01] [Paperback] Books

Spice & Wolf is one of the most well known, and well loved, light novels out there for good reason. It sets itself apart from the field in many ways and has universal appeal. It tells the journey of a travelling merchant who makes his living trading commodities for a living. Reading about someone selling a bundle of furs doesn't sound like the definition of "riveting," but it is. The intrigue of each business transaction, the subtle strategy of each conversation, the mundane turns out to be extraordinary. Complex subjects are involved but they are simply explained, and easily understood.

There's hardly a dry moment because the characters are well-realized and have depth. The banter between the protagonists is just a joy to read. Most books have to rely on the story arc as a whole to keep the reader invested. While spice & wolf certainly tells a compelling story, the moment to moment interaction between the characters alone was enough to keep me hooked.

Spice & wolf is a lengthy series but this first volume tells a full story of it's own. If you just want to read a book without having to commit yourself to a whole series, the conclusion to this first volume will leave you feeling more than satisfied. This isn't a book filled with tired old tropes; it is a breath of fresh air and I would be hard-pressed to name its equal.

Spice Wolf Volume 1   [SPICE WOLF V01] [Paperback] Books Reviews

Spice and Wolf is a manga and light novel series (with a short-lived anime) about a wandering merchant named Kraft Lawrence, during the times of olde, and his adventures after gaining the companionship of an unlikely individual...

I purchased the manga series after falling in love with the anime. Personally, I'm more of a fan of science fiction, thrillers, and gritty stories. This has none of this. This is a fantasy with elements of mystery, romance, and adventure. The result is a dynamic story that is driven highly by the main characters and their development. It is a different type of adventure; not one of swashbuckling action, but primarily one of two characters trying to a place whose exact location remains a mystery. Along the way, they hatch plans to either make riches, or just to survive. The world they live in is complex and highly detailed, thanks to the amount of effort that was put into the writing. It is complex, but not convoluted (though, some of the things will seem that way in the animated series).

That given, as a word of warning, the series does dive into ye olde economics, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. If you are into that, or can look past it, you will find a story that, in my opinion, is something different. It is a well balanced, very character driven story, that will leave a warm fuzzy feeling inside. However, it will demand your patience and attention, especially when a scheme is being hatched, or unfurled.

The artwork is wonderful and well done, with both the cover and the inside work. However; as a word of warning, there is some nudity, if that is an issue. If that is a selling point, however, it may be of a disappointment, since that is not the primary focus of this series.

I would definitely recommend this, as it is a very good series that will leave you feeling good, but still wanting more. It is a sweet story with romance, mystery, adventure, and drama. It is not fast paced at all, but it shows that good stories don't have to be.
Lawrence is a traveling merchant that is very trusted throughout the land, even though that land is very heavily controlled by the church, who will do anything to make sure the gods from the past are no longer worshiped. This doesn't affect Lawrence what-so-ever, until he finds one of these old gods sleeping in his wagon cart after a Pagan harvest festival.

The adorable god he finds is Horo, a wolf god! She can shift between forms, even though it's not the most convenient of ways, but in human form she is still left with cute little wolf ears and a tail. Her life depends on a sheaf of wheat that Lawrence has in his cart.

Obviously, Lawrence's new travel friend would cause a problem if anyone found out that she's really a Pagan god, so Horo is constantly hiding her "special additions". Lawrence agrees to help Horo get north, while Horo promises to help his sales to earn her keep.

This book heavily focuses on economics, but it isn't overwhelming. The main sub-plot surrounds the coin system and silver purity. Lawrence and Horo get wrapped up with two companies, with very similar names might I add, that have much more power than they do. This will not be the last time we see these two companies or the church, I'm sure.

This is a romance, but it's the definition of slow-burn romance. Lawrence and Horo are both such lonely creatures that truly do not deserve to be. I think I want to continue on with this series mostly just to see their happy ending (they better get a happy ending).

This book was much longer and much more thought provoking than I thought it would be. When I saw it only had a prologue, six chapters and then an epilogue, I thought it would only take me about an hour to read. Boy was I wrong. This was actually very meaty, and took me two nights to read. There was a lot to the story and plot, and the character development (as slow as it might be) was also exceptional.

This story read very beautifully, and I feel like it was translated well. I think fantasy lovers would really enjoy this, and it would be a nice place to start if you want to get into light-novels and manga.
